Family & Childhood: Daughter of U.S. Army Master Sergeant Gerhard “Jerry” Zimmermann and a social worker mother, she grew up on Army bases across Kansas, Maryland, Hawaii, Georgia, and Texas before settling in Paducah, Kentucky at age 11 .

Education: Graduated Lone Oak High School in 1986 as a National Merit Scholar. Attended Northwestern University, where she joined Alpha Phi sorority and earned a bachelor’s in theatre in 1990; she also won Miss Illinois and placed third runner-up at Miss America 1990 .
